New Order. Probably one of the most influential bands ever, debuted as Joy Division, made some groundbreaking electronic dance music, but slowly became more and more poppy with 'Republic' as commercial highlight and artistic mismatch. The last few years, members of the band have been busy in other more or less successful projects like Monaco, Revenge, the Other Two, and Electronic or have been working together with other artists (for instance Bernard Sumner with the Chemical Brothers). But in the musical landscape where Zoot Woman and Ladytron earn success after success and Human League just released their latest album, New Order show that they are still alive. 'Get Ready' is their first album in eight years. In the summer of this year, New Order played a very good set at the Olympia in Liverpool. On stage, they were accompanied by ex-Smashing Pumpkin Billy Corgan. Performing a few new songs amongst many Joy Division and New Order oldies. Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie present in the audience. Both are also present on 'Get Ready'. Corgan sings on the melodic pop song 'Turn My Way', Gillespie rocks like he hasn't done in years on 'Rock the Shack'. On the rest of the album New Order seem to turn back to the old days. That makes 'Get Ready' a real guitar album with only a few electronic references. But unlike the recent U2 album, New Order never sound dated. Opener 'Crystal'? for instance, combines loud energetic guitarwaverock with organic and danceable drums. 'Primitive Notion' even has a real Joy Division drive with a prominent role for Hooky's bass. Even in the slower, more commercial sounding tracks, New Order hit it hard. 'Get Ready' is one of the best albums New Order have made. The album also states that New Order still are able to play a role in the contemporary musical landscape. But most of all 'Get Ready' is a celebration of one of the most innovative bands ever.
