Self-produced in a filthy and sleepy suburb of Moscow, Narrowcasting’s debut is a rare gem of an indie-rock album that was recorded during the cold winter days of 2001. First of all, there is little to tell about Narrowcasting, which is not unusual for a new band from Russia, except from the fact that this Russian release comes from a successful collaboration of Andrey Konovalow and Charles Maynes, who are good friends and American musicians living in Moscow. The result of their enduring friendship is this experimental debut ...Current Or The Tide, Russia’s unexpected answer to Neil Young’s dark masterpiece Tonight Is The Night and an extremely satisfying collection of mysterious anti-folk songs that will sooner or later grab any adventurous listener.
With the exception of Alex Chilton’s wonderful Blue Moon, all tracks are written by Narrowcasting. Narrowcasting choose to explore the great American songbook to extend a self-created folk-rock style in full LO-FI. They know how to create an unlimited and abstract landscape of sound, which is consistently strong, even though the uncertain vocals behind Narrowcasting may often lack variation in an emotional way and continue with some kind of monotone whispering throughout ...Current Or The Tide. But it’s amazing to hear how they successfully manage to disguise this and even make use of the poor vocal talents (sometimes it sounds a little bit like Belle & Sebastian).
Some how this unique album has an undeniable power of attraction. Not the obvious comparisons to the work of Neil Young or R.E.M., but most likely the ambiguous side to the Americana-tinged music of Narrowcasting.
