Commandment number 1 in the Popwatchers' Rulebook: If the British hyped it, they'd probably already forgotten about it by the time they actually publish. For the first time in what seemed like many, many years there's good reason to drop that usually infallible assumption for once (concurrently rejoicing the fact that it is an assumption). The Next Big Thing is here alright, and it's as legit as they come. They're called My Vitriol, and this spunky little record they made satisfies in ways bands like Ash and Llama Farmers can only dream about. It's Deep Elm-style emo meets post-grunge melodies all over the place, and that glammy Brit attitude and the fat guitars are full-on, all the time. This downtrodden formula can fuck you up so easily (matter of fact: It is SUPPOSED to do so), but My Vitriol, be it miraculously or intelligently (who cares?), manage to escape the pitfalls and make a gloriously rocking record that astounds and charms even the most cynical ear. You actually start to believe that this is what rock is supposed to sound like. It's all very direct and very convincing, even at first hearing. One thing becomes very clear from the get-go: This band has the potential of conquering the planet Guns'n'Roses-style. By the time the sucky second album comes out and folks start realizing that you can only take a played-out formula so far, it'll be too late. These London youngsters will be on cruise control by then and worrying only about their hair and their front row seats at Alexander McQueen. And who cares anyway when you work it this well? Believe me, I won't. Commandment number 5: Don't hate 'em because they're beautiful. After all, there'll always be 'Finelines', the record that blindsided you and made you believe in The Rock again back in '01.
