There have been a couple of Muslimgauze releases since
the dead of Bryn Jones in 1999. Dar es Salaam is
another of these posthumous albums. There are no liner
notes so it remains a mystery what the origin of these
recordings is.
Dar es Salaam contains seven minimal, deconstructed
and distorted dub tracks. The Arabic melody samples in
the background is typical for the Muslimgauze sound.
There is not really something new to discover on this
album.
Dar es Salaam might be a bit too minimal to really
enjoy. I seems that the same idea (deconstruction) is
used throughout the whole album. Therefore tracks sound
a bit alike at times.
Besides that the compositions on Dar es Salaam are not
very strong. The tracks go on much too long and thus
become boring. There are no exciting hooks or changes.
It seems that every track is built around a few loops
that are manipulated and sequenced to create a
structure. But as said, these song structure are not
really exciting.
Dar es Salaam is an album that not really adds
something to the Muslimgauze repertory. This album is
fine to play in the background but that is it.
