Ms. John Soda is being promoted as a new project of Micha Acher, the musical common factor between The Notwist and Lali Puna. The true attraction of this project however is the voice and personality of one Stefanie Böhm, who in fact steals the show here. Ms. John Soda started out as her solo project of and she also featured on the Morr Music compilation Putting The Morr Back Into Music. No P. Or D. is the first full-length album and it's one hell of a debut. Ms. John Soda is definitely the most poppy project to come from the German avant-garde label, or should I say indie rock project? Although a lot of electronica was involved in the making of No P. Or D. there's a lot of room for analog instruments: guitars, bass, drums and even a trombone. Tracks like 'Unsleeping' and 'Hiding / Fading' start off where the Notwist album Neon Golden ended. No complaints about the whiney voice of Notwist singer Markus Acher but no doubt he will graciously acknowledge the fact that he isn't as beautifully stringed as miss Böhm. Her breakable voice fulfills the Morr Music credo perfectly: putting emotions into electronic music and exploring the borders of twenty-first century pop. While the main goal of a project like Lali Puna is cold musical experimentation, Ms. John Soda focuses on moving the listener with a warm but unusual combination of sounds. Acher and Böhm prove that so-called avant-garde music can also be easy to listen to, or simply great fun like with 'Go Check', by far the most catchy song on the album. If you liked Neon Golden you will simply love No P. Or D.
