Mr. Scruff's newest effort is a little bit of a disappointment, to be honest. Not that there aren't any enjoyable little tunes whatsoever on Trouser Jazz. But they all sound so thin, so little worked on, so… lacking real inspiration. Of course it is all cheeky and funny grooves but most of the time the fun, right after the discovery of its punch line, turns into mere directionlessness. Which is, we haste to stress, not good at all from a player with that kind of rep. Come Alive, Shelf Wobbler, Giffin, Valley Of The Sausages, Vibrate and the very aptly titled Come On Grandad all suffer, apart from a simply horrendous title, from the same disease — there is not a bad groove in sight, but he keeps it at that: just grooves. They lack progression, are not fleshy enough and carry around too many dated sounds. What is left, like the funky organs of single Shrimp, the soulful jazz thing that is Beyond, the sax hiphop of Champion Nibble and the Plaid-style hiphop of opener Sweetsmoke, is not up to par with Get A Move On, the man's finest moment. And Ug is included too but that one is already three years old, so the point of including it on a new album eludes us. And the very British Alex Patterson-on-a-bad-trip-style wanderings and meanderings of closing nonsense Ahoy There! will not save this album either, we fear. We won't deny that after a four-years wait, we expected something with a little more substance.
