Mouthwash is a four piece from London, UK which play a sort of old-style ska-punk like labelmates Rancid. Being influenced by Bad Religion, Minor Threat and Rancid the teenagers (two are 18, one is 19 and one is 22) started playing in 1995. Two years later they released the EP 'Music For The Average Ninja' on their own label called 'Hot Wok' records. After playing as opener for several Hellcat acts Mouthwash got signed at Hellcat in 1999 only after releasing another EP through 'Hot Wok' records, called 'Fools Gold'. The title-track has appeared on the Hellcat Records compilation 'Give 'em the Boot II' and can also be found on this first (self produced) full-length album. Although Mouthwash sometimes reminded me a lot of Rancid at the time of 'And Out Come The Wolves' and 'Live Won't Wait' they bring their music with so much youthful enthusiasm and experimental hooks that '1000 Dreams' becomes a self-contained album. Listen to the excellent song 'Live Like Kings' to hear a flute-solo, 'Babylondon' to hear the Jamaican roots of ska combined with a typical English punk refrain and even a ragga-MC, and the last song 'Saving Grace' to experience an acoustic ska-song. The production of the record isn't outstanding (I wanted to check if there was dust on the needle of my record player only to realize that I was playing a CD), but this also gives the raw energy of an old punk record. And that is the strength of Mouthwash; despite their young age they know their roots and turn those into an original blend of old and new punk, ska and hardcore. With this band Hellcat records invest in the future.
