Okay, Vince Montana is, as the originator of the Salsoul Orchestra, a pivotal figure in Philly's dance history. And yes, he remains influential through the sampling of his work by acknowledged housemasters like Glenn Underground and Nick Holder. And indeed, 2020 Vision, the Freaks duo and other underground house labels are undoubtedly indebted to his groovy beats and sassy soul voices. And the classic Heavy Vibes is indeed a scorcher of a dance record. But this does not disguise the fact that disco in its purest form has died out a long while ago. Nor does it justify that there are four versions of said Heavy Vibes on this double cd. Nor does it explain the countless retakes and mixes of South Soul Party (three versions) and It Looks Like Love (seven versions) contained on this collection. There are arguably some fine vibes and grooves to be discovered, but we can't deny either that it's way too extended and same-sounding to enjoy on cd.
I guess we'll have to wait for the vinyl version to fully appreciate the reputation this man apparently enjoys with people like MAW, Madonna and Whitney Houston, who all sampled or re-recorded his material.
Remains the naked fact that this collection would probably have benefited immensely from a single cd release. Nostalgia is one thing, a good compilation is another.
