It's not hard to believe that Modjo are from France, and the fact that they're a duo is also not remarkable, because the influence of Daft Punk is really clear. Well, their first singles 'Chillin'' and 'Lady' are two songs that are even better than the biggest part of Daft Punk's latest 'Discovery' album. But Yann Destagnol and Romain Tranchart aren't patient enough to put just one sound on the album. 'Peace of Mind' and 'What I Mean' could have been commercial r&b songs, including the cool beat, simple lyrics, and the trembling voice, but they can get away with the crime. On the contrary: You easily indulge yourself in the catchy rhythms and the continuous returning guitar samples. A bit less electronic than Les Rythmes Digitales, a bit more modern than the Pet Shop Boys, much more acceptable than the 80s disco shit, but you can hear them all back in the song on their self-titled debut album. But where some of their French colleagues were able to make a constantly impressing album, Modjo don't finish the job, because the second part of the album just isn't as good as the first. It's still entertaining, but also average. Still, it's an interesting newcomer with a high potential and some terrific singles. And also make sure to catch them while they're on tour, with a full instrumental line-up.
