Well, this one's a big shout to British producer MJ Cole for making one of the best melting-togethers of two tracks I've heard in a while. Putting together Burning Spears classic 'Civilized Reggae' and Jazzanova's rework of Cole's very own 'Sincere' is a mix that keeps surprising me at every re-run and makes me want to shout: 'why hasn't anybody thought of that before?'. MJ Cole has been named flavour-of-the-month numerous times and the 'Back to Mine' series already featured all the other flavours - from Groove Armada to Everything But The Girl and Faithless.
Yet, surprisingly, this is a very daring and unusual mix album. Cole is not here to show off his mixing skills but his (scholarly) musical knowledge and diverse taste. Hence you get a piece of Ravel after the Jazzanova/Cole masterpiece. I admit I'll never play this thing from beginning untill end (there is UK Garage on it and the ultrasweet twenty-first century pop that is Zero 7's 'Destiny' personally gives me the creeps), but Cole has a very interesting way of surfing through music styles.
It all starts off with obscure instrumental hip hop, over to The Cinematic Orchestra and back to soulful hip hop with Outkast. There's a chapter of seventies soul with Archie Bell and The Commodores and a bit of laidback d&b with LTJ Bukem. A lot of sweet stuff too, which is another reason why I won't play this without first checking the batteries of the remote, but thank God somebody thought of mixing up Jazzanova and da Spear!
