Even though Messiah's Kiss is a new name in the metal scene, the members of this German power metal band are no newbies. The vocalist is Mike Tirelli, well known for his work with Holy Mother. The other musicians were previously active in a band called Repression, which released four albums in the period from 1986 till 1998. When their original frontman left the band, they ran into Mr. Tirelli, and Messiah's Kiss was founded.
One would expect that a band with such experienced members automatically results in a superalbum. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Don't get me wrong: Prayer For The Dying isn't a bad record at all. All twelve tracks on this classic-metal album contain strong melodies, catchy riffs, and powerful vocals. The guitar solos and riffs strongly recall metal gods Judas Priest.
And this is exactly the problem with Messiah's Kiss: We've all heard this kind of heavy metal a gazillion times before! When Priest did it back in the eighties, it blew people away. When Hammerfall and Primal Fear did it in the nineties, it was a nice flashback for most heavy metal fans. But now it starts to become a drag. This is quite a shame, as the guys from Messiah's Kiss are pretty good musicians. They just lack originality.
Prayer For The Dying is a decent debut album that shows this band's potential. If only they developed their own sound, instead of simply copying Judas Priest's, Messiah's Kiss could become one of the major players in the metal scene!
