Are you one of those music fans always hoping to discover the next big thing? That rock group that will turn your life around? That brilliant new band that has so far eluded your grasp, but you know is out there? Then I have important news for you: It's not Mavis. However, if you are keen on hearing a band that, at its best, sounds like Billy Bragg playing early Lemonheads and Ramones covers, and at its worst, sounds like your less-than-accomplished school band in rehearsal, then this may, in fact, be the band for you.
With this in mind, the most interesting tracks on offer here are the short burst of Ramones rock (complete with "Hey-ho let's go!" chant) of 'Punk Rock Christmas,' the poppy '3 vs 1,' and the moderately tuneful 'Class War on the Dancefloor." The title of this last track, together with tracks like 'Sleeping With The Marxists,' would seem to hint at deeper lyrical content. It is, therefore, rather dissapointing to find a lack of refinement in this regard, throughout the album. A fact that is further stressed by the thick Yorkshire accent of singer James McMahon. McMahon, who wrote all the songs, has even named a track in honor of the late Stanley Kubrick — a creative and artistic adventurer if ever there was one. However, a lyrical examination of the track reveals that the title in no way refers to Kubrick's body of work but to the physical likeness of an aquaintance. That great man would probably have hoped for a rather better and more interesting dedication.
