Finally this long-awaited Matrix album hits the streets courtesy of Virus Recordings, Ed Rush and Optical's label. Throughout 'Sleepwalker', Matrix shows his versatility in the variety of styles he can master, from fierce two-step in the best Virus tradition to intelligent drum&bass and even trip-hop. The album kicks off really strong with 'Temperament', a superbly structured dancefloor-track that is enhanced by some great sub-bass sounds and a nicely filtered synth-stab. Next up are some living-room orientated tracks that breathe quality and atmosphere and are reminiscent of some of the better Breakbeat Culture releases. The pace goes up again in 'Sleepwalk': a brilliant bass-line drops in over the funky two-step and halfway through a filtered bass-stab adds to the overall perfection. 'Sleepwalk' prepares the way for 'Apache', a murderous track that could have featured on Bad Company's 'Fear E.P.'. Raving hard, atmospheric from the word go and relentless like a predator stalking his prey. From there on, the pace goes down again in favor of atmosphere, culminating in 'Junction', a fabulous trip-hop track that forms the 'Sleepwalker' finale. Throughout the entire album, the atmosphere is enhanced by sparse and functional use of tribal rhythms, ambient soundscapes and some guitar samples. Quite risky, but Matrix pulls it off in a very natural way and almost never goes over the edge. All in all, a quality album from one of the better artists in the arena...
