Berlin's Chain Reaction records hit 31 with the latest from Matrix. As you'd expect, it has all the usual Chain Reaction elements coupled with those extra special Matrix-specific additions (white noise). For those of you who don't know what Chain Reaction stands for: their sound has been described by some as "slowed-down techno played on the bottom of the ocean", which, actually, sums it up quite nicely. Imagine, if you will, Jeff Mills overdosing on Quaaludes and you've pretty much got the idea.
On this release, though, the above description doesn't quite hold true: compared to previous offerings, the tracks on this twelve-inch all possess a certain urgency and drive that detract from the drowsiness Chain Reaction is usually known for. The kickdrum sounds are, for once, not buried underneath miles and miles of reverb and chorus, but come through crisp and sharp in the mix. As if that's not enough, they reach ludicrous speeds as well, clocking in at a whopping 150 bpm on one count and never dropping below about 125 (rough estimates). This is not to say, of course, that Matrix has gone club on us: there's still more than enough underwater organs and drones to keep even the staunchest dubheads happy and spaced out. Only this time, they'll be happy and spaced out on the dancefloor.
