With subgenres burning bright and fading out in a manner more suited for torrid, yet ill-fated love affairs, house music's ability to retain firm footing in such a dynamic musical landscape is nothing short of remarkable. Thanks in part to New York house stalwarts John Mateo and Eddie Matos, smooth, soulful house is showing no indication of taking a turn towards self-parody à la acid jazz or trip-hop. Indeed, their latest mix CD 'Inspirations' is an intelligently crafted and sensitive journey through the deeper sounds of house. Starting out calmly with Kimru Kimra's low-key 'Raise the Dead', Mateo & Matos gently ease the listener into faster-paced, more club-oriented tunes. Once 'Got to Be Free' by Zoo Experience featuring Brian Chambers hits the speakers, the mix takes off into an uplifting, feel-good house experience. From that point on, each track builds easily, carefully edited and mixed flawlessly. Josma's 'Voices in Los Angeles' is an exercise in hip-shaking house, with its supremely funky vibe, rambling guitar, and healthy dose of live drumming and cheering. Following this number is 'Move On Up' by Whiteside vs. Christopher S, a stellar classic garage-influenced piece with pulsating piano riffs, shimmering synth work, and appropriately acrobatic female vocals. There are but a scant few missteps in this mix. Besides a slightly plodding beginning and the slightly out-of-place inclusion of the duo's minimalist 'Raw Basics' Mateo & Matos more than make up for any awkward moments with astutely selected tracks of subtle beauty and positive outlook. Aptly titled, this mix serves as reminder of house music's long-lasting appeal and works equally well at home or or a night on the town.
