Ex-Helium frontwoman Mary Timony releases her proud second solo effort. Timony's feminist art-rock recalls Liz Phair's debut Exile From Main St. Although The Golden Dove contains somewhat less straightforward rock than Phair's records, both women share the same feel for real grrlpower: "I don't care what you do, doing drugs, popping pills." Apart from the self-confident guitar compositions, there are plenty of piano-based songs, turning into dream-like arrangements that Kate Bush wouldn't be ashamed of. The Golden Dove is a mature rock record that doesn't jump any bandwagon. You can grab this record out of your collection in ten years without the chance of it sounding outdated; instead, it'll still be surprisingly good.
