When the Gear Daddies broke up in 1992, Minnesota’s roots-rocker Martin Zellar immediately embarked on a solo career, which was later continued with the backing band the Hardways. Zellar’s brilliant solo debut Born Under continued the familiar small-town tragedies and country-tinged balladry of the Gear Daddies. Pleasing examples of catchy roots-rock are the Gear Daddies’ Billy Live Bait, The Many Moods of Martin Zellar & the Hardways and this brand new solo CD Scattered. This new collection of eleven working-class songs is a welcome return and at the same time Martin Zellar’s first new full-length release in over four years. He and the Hardways energetically led off the album with 'Here Is To Everyone', a song in which Martin Zellar and his backing band successfully demonstrate their Bruce Springsteen-inspired stadium rock. The Hardways really rock out on this one and they make maximum use of the soulful voice of Martin Zellar, which is full of melody and passion throughout the whole album. Much of Martin Zellar’s Scattered is driven and timeless roots-rock à la Bruce Springsteen and John Hiatt, but there is quite some fine laidback country-rock on Scattered as well, with some really nice bluegrass-styled harmonies and witty lyrics from Martin Zellar. Scattered is highly recommended and worth the money for just the explosive opening riffs on 'Here Is To Everyone'.
