How does one go from funk and early hip hop to minimal tech-house? Former breakdancer and current Poker Flat Recordings fixture Martin Landsky surely bridges the gap, creating spare and delicate sonic textures flecked with heart and soul. His latest release, In Between, is a cohesive, thoughtful work which explores the quieter side of house and clattering techno with ease and laidback flare. The opening track, 'Spy on Summer', serves as a wonderful introduction to Landsky’s work. This subtle house tune coasts along with minimal percussion, building slowly to lush—yet somewhat restrained—string orchestration. The overall effect is quite light and airy, and this feeling is expertly maintained by Landsky throughout the rest of the album: check 'Sweet Sweet Morning' for ethereal tech-house, and 'A Light Breeze' for buoyant deep house.
Landsky picks up speed towards the middle of the record, and unleashes a string of positively delightful tracks. 'Breeze of the Nightingale' employs an intricate mesh of clicks and pops whilst maintaining a balanced composition, and comes off as cool, easy house touched with a hollow, catchy flute line. 'Unleashed' is somewhat reminiscent of Herbert-style experimental house, and another gem, 'Pfhey', utilizes waves of tantalizing synths punctuated by low grunts. As Landsky delves into busier techno tracks, he still maintains an air of effortless beauty. 'Use Me' is a churning, glitchy techno workout complete with an eerie, guttural voice moaning 'use me' in a robotic manner; futuristic synth lines and an odd triangle hit here and there complements the hand drumming which runs throughout. 'Machina (Play it Again)' is truly an epic tune, using a trippy, spiraling synth pattern over minimal tech-house beats before moving into carefully restrained yet percussive techno. The sound of the track varies subtly and moves through gentle peaks and valleys, all the while supported by subtle, consistent pulsations. Overall, an excellent showing from Martin Landsky. This album should more than satisfy those who enjoy listening carefully to their music.
