Marino Berardi | Plan B
12", Wally's Groove World
Tekst: da volgaBabe
Publicatiedatum: 20 september 2000
With a string of stunning releases from Swirl People, Arsenal, Brandy and Marius, the upstart of 3 or so sublabels, Wally is on his way of becoming the patron saint of the new continental deephouse. His labelsound -in which classic deep house, breakbeat and progressive elements are the main ingredients, but where there's always room for experiments and spaced-out craziness- keeps on navigating between different regions of the (tech)house spectrum but along the way Koenie has managed to keep up the one and only essential standard: Quality. And these two releases are not gonna bend down the still steeply rising curve. Luxemburg's pride Berardi -he has already been licensed to Francois K.'s Wave imprint and recently recorded for Eric Morillo's Subliminal- presents two more clubmonsters. 'Plan B' owes it all to the fat rolling bassline, worthy of the dirtiest of the Dirty House Crew, later on re-enforced even more by his version of the deep Reese sound as known from his Forced-releases. But it is 'Class of 94' that can help you reach pure bliss: A driving, almost progressive track with echoes of early Serious Grooves releases or Claude Young's mellow period on KMS, 430 West and Generator. Very commendable indeed.
And then there's Mayaku -Koenie himself together with his mates Jan and Marius- having their usual deeper-than-deep night-out, with two extremely cool cuts that run easily around 10 minutes. Here it is especially the titletrack that deserves your attention: a tension-filled dark yet smooth groove in due time infiltrated by an occasional synthwave, a lost Basic Channel echo and the obligatory battery of way-out trippy sounds. Deserves your attention, this one! 'Flying carpet', on the flip, is an honest soulful house groove in Marius-style that is surprisingly supported by a Marino Berardi-style rhythmtrack. Cool record, Classy label.
