Machinehead was one of the first metalbands I really got into. After a period of listening to (and growing up with) bands like Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth (oh, and don't forget Guns 'n Roses!), I really got into the 'newer' metal of bands like Korn and Machinehead. That was back in 1994 (Machinehead's debut for Roadrunner; 'Burn my Eyes'). But now it's 2001 and this already is Machinehead's fourth album. On their previous album (1999's 'The Burning Red') we saw the band experimenting with more nu-metal influences, raps and even clean vocals of vocalist Rob Flynn. 'Supercharger' is nothing more than the logical sequel to that album, although some songs remind me of the good ol' days of 'Burn my eyes' (e.g. the song 'Only the Names', a song that could easily have been on that album). Overall the most songs (e.g. 'Crashing around you' and 'All in your head') are songs with the same vibe and atmosphere as the whole 'The Burning Red' album. Within a period of years Machinehead have paved the ways for a lot of modern metal bands, and this album just goes on where Machinehead left a few years ago. But the vocals of vocalist Rob Flynn are growing with every album, as well as the depth of the nu-metal-parts of the songs. Whether you like it or not. For me personally, there won't be better Machinehead-days than the days of 'Burn my Eyes', but this definitely is a nice album. Oh, and if you're planning to buy it, this time around the digipack version with four extra songs will be released at the same time as the normal version!
