Nine songs, thirty minutes of sultry music from the mysterious Mister Love Wollberg and his band from Sweden. Restless Farewell is a mix of fragile moments of misery and sparks of hope, impersonated by a storyteller. All songs are based on acoustic guitar accompaniment, with a rich cabinet of musical instruments delicately added to intensify the mood. The resemblance to the sound of Elliott Smith is abundantly clear; Wollberg, however, does convince with an overall strong and characteristic album (whereas Smith seems more capable of making collections of songs). Still, it must be said that Wollberg should try to personalize his sound, in order to distinguish himself from the American indie troubadour.
Restless Farewell can be described as an imaginary soundtrack to a man's miserable life. Clearly restless, the story begins with opener 'Did What You Had To Do,' followed by the up-tempo 'Wrong Decision Man,' a song about acceptance. But accepting the mess you're in and getting over it seems to be hard, for Wollberg still has business to take care of in 'Chasing My Demons Away.' 'Not The Same' has a beautiful groove that sticks to your mind and actually makes you feel comfortable with the interpreted misery. With 'City Lights,' and 'Close The File,' which includes guitar solos recalling the atmosphere on Mark Lanegan's great album Scraps At Midnight, finally the misery is overcome. End track 'Sick Of You' is a final slap in the face to the one who caused all the trouble in the first place: "This time I won't come back . . . " When leaving the past behind seems like the best thing for you to do, make sure to take Restless Farewell with you, as you hit the road.
