Do you remember that movie Fargo by the Coen brothers? It's situated in the middle of the US, in the wintertime, and the only thing you can see when you stare in the distance, is the white snow layered over immense, totally empty landscapes. If it weren't for that undercooled humor in the storyline, the movie would have had a devistatingly lonely atmosphere. Loscil has made the perfect soundtrack for that imaginary movie. His music is like you're wandering through a cold desolate landscape, with no chance that the sun is ever to be seen through the thick clouds of mist. Loscil's minimalistic soundscapes are full of dubby echoes, known from releases by the Basic Channel label, but they are also not unlike Biosphere's cold ambient or Aphex Twin's ambient works on 'SAW II'. Quite some references, but Loscil manages to stay close to the quality from those artists as well. His silent, textural tracks don't seem to leave a lasting impression, but the disturbing undertone clings to your subconcious and doesn't let go until 'Triple Point' is over. When you read the album's describtion from the recordcompany, you see the album is based on the concept of thermodynamics, the physical science which investigates the conversion of heat into mechanical force or energy, and vice versa. A fascinating concept, and it provides a totally different listening experience than before. But the outcome stays the same, wether you think of it as an imaginary soundtrack or scientific concept album: Loscil has suceeded in producing an album that leaves a lasting mark on your subcouncious. Fascinating.
