We, who were still recovering from Charles Webster’s latest endeavours on Peacefrog, had, at the very least, expected the acknowledged master of UK Deep House to draw some breath after the healing millennial soul of his first album. But, as it were casually, he simply decided to amaze us once more with another new project on a fresh label. With the divine intervention of Sara Jay’s mesmerizing vocal powers, Sir Webster conjures up a dark house hybrid that we, after hours, days, weeks of intense brainstorming, can only describe as ‘blues house’. Herbert does his trademark awkward remix thing on the flip but it’s the achingly emotional original vocal, submerged in the same steamy, swampy subterranean underworld where Massive Attack and Tricky have dwelled their darker days, that will continue to haunt our mindscape for years to come. Essential Magic from a man who is becoming a league of his own.
