Pretty unusual for sure, but for one time we have to concur entirely with the press babble that traditionally accompanies a promo release. For there is truly some amazing ambient to be found on this mesmerising sixtracker. Made up of members of American electro-industrialists L'Usine, Starfish Pool's Koen Lybaert and the equally Antwerp-based Zeal and Cinérex, Llips nevertheless conjures up lost and hidden images from America's backwaters. Visions of prairies and deserts at dusk conquer themselves a way through the musical battlefields of my mind when experiencing the fragile, almost unmoved blending of Basic Channel's post-industrial hum and metronome beats, Lybaert's musing guitars on the verge of estrangement and the wailing, bluesy voice that, from time to time, emerges from the background of this calm yet increasingly mysterious sound painting. The best way to describe this splendid record is to present it as an alternative soundtrack to David Lynch's Twin Peaks or as a coming together of The Orb's Krautmadness and The Cure's Carnage Visors. But then again, we could just as well state that Koen Lybaert finally managed to strike the right balance between the guitar experimentations of Starfish Enterprises and the seemingly monotone yet intricate ambient techno of Starfish Pool. Wonderful music for your daymares and nightmares alike. Buy this, were it only for the chilling opening track 'It's Electric', where the singer 'reaches out for emotion', like we all must. If most of the time we have to dig in the dirt to find sparkles of love and truth on this godforsaken planet, then this is a damn fine way to start diggin'. Electronic poetry of the highest momentum!
