Layo and Matthew B. are a match made in heaven. The first is co-owner of
London's The End, and with his sparse, but always very impressive, productions,
he is one of the few to have ever brought genuine soul into UK techno and
tech-house. The second is the big, English, studio-wizard, annex-certified
genius. Together they make something miraculous that is (in-between all the
typical English hyping of progressive, tech-house, breaks, 2-step) — what
do you know — completely unique in today's world of eclectic electronics.
And
with Nightworks, they produced, almost predictably, their first masterpiece.
Not that Low Life wasn't a great record, but the new effort is more rounded,
looking for continuity throughout. And it contains some of the most
beautifully produced melodies and rhythms ever heard coming out of a
computer. Love Story, already more than a year ago reviewed on these pages,
is finally presented to the people in all its lasting glory. Shining
Through, 2Morrow, Sleepy Language, and All Night Long are the names of the
best tracks, but it is best to buy the mixed CD for the sheer listening
experience. Night Works is a rich composite of breaks, acid, techno, hip-hop,
tribal, downbeat, electrofunk, ambient-house, and everything else that's good
about today's electronic scene. And as is custom with this duo, the sampling
is out-of-this-world. But only when you've been exposed to the splendour of
absolute highlight Let The Good Times Roll, will you know exactly what I mean.
Essential listening and dancing material.
