Five years ago, the British dance magazine Muzik mentioned Dutch youngster Laidback Luke as one of the biggest DJ talents. Although he released numerous 12-inches and a compilation of his hit singles, Electronic Satisfaction is his debut album. Laidback Luke's style ranges from filterhouse with a commercial touch to sleazy dance classics injected with lots of eighties. Surprisingly, the mixture of Luke's danceable techno and old new wave is remarkably well-matched. Popmusic, for example, is Martha & The Muffins' Echo Beach rhythms blended with bored-sounding vocals by Jay Underground and Luke's beats. But also, tracks like Give Me A Reason, Let Me Live, Sinderella, and Spacefunk are heavily influenced by eighties music. Call it nostalgia, but I like them very much. The fact is Luke — maybe because he is much too young to have experienced the eighties — is able to pick up the right elements and create something new without sounding hopelessly old-fashioned. Which doesn't go for most of the remaining tracks on Electronic Satisfaction. Excluding the instant hit Rocking With The Best, his danceable house, with simple but effective dominant vocals, and U.S.garage-like sound, is not eloquent enough. But for the most part, Luke is doing what he is really good at: mixing eighties, nineties, and the present together. Better than, for instance, Zoot Woman and Les Rythmes Digitales did. And that is a compliment.
