L' Altra seem to have elaborated a scheme with their second album In The Afternoon. Coming from the creative scene of Chicago (Tortoise, The Sea And Cake, Papa M), this four-piece has - along with many friends - brought forth an astounding album of elegant pop compositions. The songs on In The Afternoon are well-thought-out melodic structures with beautiful details. The band's inner need to experiment with arrangements produces a sound somewhere between acoustic pop, pastoral folk, and more organic-sounding post rock; it lays in line with the work of bands such as Sodastream, The American Analog Set, and Yo La Tengo's last album And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out.
L' Altra obviously took some time to listen to their own compositions, to patiently try and perfect the arrangements. The opening song, Soft Connection, sees both vocalists Lindsay Anderson and Joseph Costa introduce what will be the atmosphere of the following songs: warm harmonies that feel comfortable. The subdued trumpets on the truly beautiful Black Arrow are perfectly timed as are the violins on Ways Out. The lightly-brushed drums, the fidgety piano playing, and the perfectly dosed and timed additives give away the sharp hearing of the band members. The arrangements are at the same time soft and incorruptible as well as exciting, due to subtle changes and variations in pace. Ways Out, for that matter, is a perfect example of how the songs start off lightly but end up intense in a subtle way when the drum brushes get faster to reach an emotional peak: "Keep it... / Keep it from keeping you..."
Slowly and without any pretensions but to produce small works of art, this album unfolds to those without hurry. It's a complex, melodic, and emotional record without getting inaccessible. If only we had an Album Of The Month title...
