We stand amazed at the amount of devotion the Kyoto Jazz Massive crew invest to emulate the sounds of the golden jazz age. This means that for those who are not into their blend of new electronics and perfectly produced jazz, Spirit Of The Sun, their first album for Compost, will bring no surprises. This being said, there are not too many bad tracks on Spirit Of The Sun. The optimistic jazz-breaks and heavenly vibes of The Brightness Of These Days brightly start up proceedings, followed closely by the gorgeous Mind Expansions, that is lending more than one ear towards 4hero and the West-London massive. The Galaxy 2 Galaxy-style Stargazer, the cosmic Idjut-style house of Substream and the Carl Craig-style synth-washes of Behind The Shadow, too, all make for inspired tracks. And the wonderful Eclipse still has the enchanting keys it had a few years ago. Only Deep In Your Mind, with nightingale Victor Davies on vocals, is a little bit too sugary for our taste, as is the formulaic bossa of Shine. As a collection of tracks more than up to par, as an album maybe a tad disappointing.
