Kitchens & Bathrooms are well known for their inspiring acoustics. Everybody likes to sing while under a hot shower or in front of a steamy cooking pan. And that's probably where the Canadian band Kitchens & Bathrooms got the idea for their name. Now don't expect simple sing-along tunes, because we are dealing with a math rock band: beware of complexity.
K&B plays fragmented yet cohesive guitar rock that is clearly influenced by bands such as Shellac and the Jesus Lizard. Utter A Sound, their second full-length CD, was recorded in two days and produced by Daniel L. Burton (guitarist of instrumental indie band Ativin), who has also worked as a producer with Songs:Ohia, Earlydayminers, and Papa M. The album contains twelve outstanding songs of convoluted structure, changing tempos, and emotionally charged vocals.
Opener 'Tri-coastal Grievances' is just a running track, but with 'Fetching Farewells,' the band kicks off loud, with singer Phil Williams nearly hoarse already. From that moment on, the energy of the music is so overwhelming, and mood swings within and between songs are so sudden that the complete album feels like one adventurous trip. In order to understand this trip, you need to give the record several spins and full attention, but it gets more worthwhile every time. K&B is one of Canada's top rock bands of the moment, and when you listen to Utter A Sound, you will know why.
