With all ears pointed towards Philly anyway, King Britt writes another
chapter in the book of the city's musical accomplishments. In this case, that
means full-on African Roots with alternately percussion-based grooves,
broken beats, and a wee bit of house filling in the rhythmical chapters. But
first and for all, it means a mass infusion of sassy soul and feline funk.
Our never-tiring volgaFeet were instantly chasing off to the floor for the
hot-blooded Oba Chant and the previously released, never-ending, celebration
jam Freedom. And we continued the sacred dance to the brooding, ancestral
jazz-funk of Bush Workout, the primeval Afro-house spirit of Uzoamaka, and
the voodoo-electro of Shango. If you are into Frédéric Galliano's
(radically different on the technical
level, yet very kindred in spirit) African
Divas project on F-Comm, then you might as well direct your further
investigations towards King Britt's roots universe. But the people who left
their hearts with the West-London breaks scene won't be disappointed either.
A classy act.
