Contemporary Scandinavian folk acts often seek new forms to transform traditional tunes to. Numerous artists have already used genres like rock, dance and jazz at times.
Kimmo Pohjonen's new album Kluster opens with the track Ulaani, which comes quite close to a traditional tango. Besides this tango Pohjonen's accordion sounds are set in all sort of forms on his new album. Typical of this album is the experimental use of the accordion in combination with electronics. Basically, there is only one accordion playing on this album, which is looped and used in combination with samples of voices and other sounds. The different layers of accordion music mixed with weird samples of chants, water and all kinds of unidentified sounds create some exciting and at times haunting songs. A track like Ohimo is much like Hedningarna's Shaman techno and songs like Alla and Avanto are much more soundscapes than actual songs.
Kluster is an exceptional folk album with only the comment that the tradition of Scandinavian folk music is at times hardly recognizable. This album is therefore only recommendable for the experimental orientated listener.
