Kevin Saunderson, techno legend if there ever was one, has released his episode in the up-'til-now pretty consistent Trust The DJ series. And that is good news; and . . . it is bad news. Mister Reese may, without any shred of a doubt, be considered one of the most influential personas in techno history; however, he has, up 'til now, not succeeded in convincing us of his technical DJ capabilities. The big surprise (i.e., the good news) with 'KS01' is that it is the technical side that's pretty outstanding. With slightly chaotic, yet utterly whipping, interventions in the approved Derrick May style, the whole flashes by you before you've realised what you've heard. With the Mayday Man he shares the penchant for a cocktail of potent grooves and festive tribalism. There are even times when he relishes the third deck, which, of course, only adds to the general party atmosphere.
The bad news is that almost every track is backed, and at times simply overpowered, by that trademark Reese zooming-bass sound, these days shamelessly counterfeited by the legion of followers. The mix also reflects the annoying fact that today's standard techno package loses strength after three quarters of an hour and turns into one big watery effect box soup. A shame, 'cause judging by the first 45 minutes (with tracks from the likes of Octave One, Steve Bicknell, Oxia & The Hacker, Funk D'Void, G Flame and Gary Martin), we'd have rated him a straight A. A wee bit disappointing from one of the men who helped forge the original Detroit Techno Soul.
