The burden of a successful band on the back of the former lead-singer can be heavy. How good the solo-outings are, they'll always be compared to the earlier work of the ex-band. This year two solo-projects grabbed my attention: Chris Cornell, formerly of Soundgarden, and ex-Life of Agony-singer Keith Caputo. Two bands which I regard as very important for the heavy music, not in the least because of the remarkable voice of the singers. They both stepped away from the heavy music they used to make and started making quieter music. And now Keith Caputo has even released this acoustic album after requests from people who had seen his acoustic shows. The album contains a few acoustic versions of 'Died Laughing' tracks ('Upsy Daisy', 'Brandy Duval', 'New York City', 'Honeycomb', 'Razzberry Mockery' and 'Dew Drop Magic') mostly performed by Keith Caputo together with his guitarist. The other songs are previously unreleased or unfinished. On these rare tracks a complete band accompanies him. It includes an acoustic version of Life of Agony's 'Let's Pretend' and a cover of the Annie Lennox song 'Why'. Personally, I didn't like the original version of 'Why' and Caputo's versions (there are two on the album: the single-version and a 'Dafunk-version') cannot bring any pleasure either. But there are some songs that I really like. The unfinished 'The Girl I Love' is an easygoing and laid-back song with a catchy Hammond Organ. I also like the semi-acoustic 'Yesterday is an Eternity'. The songs that grabbed my attention from the acoustic 'Died Laughing' songs were the opener and playful 'Upsy Daisy' and 'Razzberry Mockery' (the way he sings "shame on you, you bitch" is haunting). Keith Caputo is a good singer and 'Died laughing Pure' surely isn't a bad CD. The only problem is that Keith Caputo has changed from an outstanding metal-singer to a good singer-songwriter. This is the burden from his old band. And that is a shame, because Keith Caputo deserves more.
