Scottish producer Joseph Malik's debut album comes rather quickly after the release of his first single on Germany's finest label Compost Records. And luckily so, I might add. Malik's soulful music and vocals sound like they've always been there, but when you don't hear them, you'll miss them. Diverse is a 48-minute trip of joy: It's pure soul with a main role for the acoustic guitar. Uptempo songs like Ibotribe (with its UK garage-reminiscent broken beat), Futuristica, and the single (and Bill Withers' cover) Take It All In And Check It All Out alternate with more introverted tracks, such as opener Melodies, SoulBlues, Mother's Son, and Evil Things, and the mood is both clubby and homey. It makes the title of the album an apt one, and it makes Diverse a sweet little pearl that grows and grows each time you listen to it.
