If you haven’t picked up The Blues Explosion’s latest, Plastic Fang, there’s a treat waiting for you. The folks at Matador have slapped on a bonus disc of live footage to accompany the band’s most focused record to date.
The DVD fun starts with videos for Plastic Fang’s two singles ‘She Said’ and ‘Sweet ‘N Sour’. ‘She Said’ is a topless B-movie romp through a medieval castle with everyone’s leading man Jon Spencer. He spends the duration of the video rocking out and casting a spell on a bunch of uptight nuns who turn into sexy topless nuns. I’m fairly certain that the Catholic Church would rank this video as highly as Last Temptation of Christ should the Pope get a look at it. But I don’t think he was in the crowd last time JSBX rocked Rome, so I think they’re safe. ‘Sweet ‘N Sour’ is an animated look at life on the road for the band. The band is depicted in South Park-esque style as they tear across the country.
The rest of the video features fairly standard concert footage with some memorable interviews. Hardcore fans will consider this a must as the viewer sees both sides of Spencer’s persona. One, featured during a Canadian interview, is the insane blueshound preaching the gospel of the band and informing everyone that if they bring a box of Tim Horton doughnuts to the show they’ll get in for free. The other side of Spencer, Captured in a Belgian interview, shows the soft-spoken, introspective Spencer that only those close to him must know. Here he is the polar opposite of his stage persona.
Finally, the grand finale, in true over the top JSBX fashion is a live performance on a French talk show that had Jackie Chan on before the band. The band tears into a long jam that features a seemingly insane Spencer freaking out to his theremin, dragging an endless microphone cord through the audience and hooting about the blues the entire way. At the apex of the performance Judah Bauer is playing guitar atop Russell Simmons’ bass drum as Spencer jumps on the host’s table, towering above Chan continuing his blues tirade. “Hey! It’s my man Jackie Chan!,” shouts Spencer as he continues on his way. A romping slice of the Blues Explosion that fans will love and newcomers will gawk in astonishment at. The DVD proves to have something for everyone, but appeals mostly to hardcore fans of the band.
