Sure, there are a lot of people who will remember Johan because of their nameless debut album they released five years ago. Because of those catchy guitar songs, the hit single 'Everybody Knows', a lot of positive attention in the press, and the promise of international success. But although the album and the band had a lot of potential, Johan was only successful in their own country. Now we're five years ahead, and Johan is back. The only two band members that remained from the original formation are singer Jacco de Greeuw and drummer Wim Kwakman. New are Maarten Kooijman (guitar), Diets Dijkstra (guitars, slide), and Diederik Nomden (guitars, keyboards, piano, backing vocals). And although their debut could already be regarded as a classic, 'Pergola' will really strike twice as hard. Starting with opener 'Tumble and Fall', apparently a very good new single candidate, with a refrain that will stay in your head after just one spin. But please get used to that. Like the first single 'Pergola', about the boredom and routine of living in the boring suburbs ("Here we go once again and again/Going round and around"). But the strength of 'Pergola' lies especially in songs like 'Day Is Done' and 'How Does It Feel'. Very personal, intimate, and still subtle. That could be said about everything on 'Pergola': It's more complete, and the guitars have a secondary part. It's very obvious: Johan provides us with the album we've all been waiting for. Listen to 'Pergola', and you can't imagine your future without it.
