Back in 1991, Jesus Jones ruled the charts on both sides of the Atlantic with singles like 'Real Real Real' and 'International Bright Young Thing', taken from their second album 'Doubt', filled with an interesting mix of dance and rock music. The follow-up 'Perverse' was an even bigger success artistically, but somehow sold a lot less copies. This signalled the begining of internal and label struggles, that resulted in nobody noticing (including me - a big fan at the time) the next album 'Already'. And not only Jesus Jones, but the entire population of British bands that mixed loud guitars with house bleeps seemed to have gone the way of the dodo. Ned's Atomic Dustbin, Pop Will Eat Itself, EMF anyone?
And now out of nowhere there is 'London', Jesus Jones' comeback album. Or more appropiately: throwback album. Where the best tracks of 'Perverse' like 'Your Crusade' and 'Idiot Stare' have stood the test of time and are still among the best rock-dance hybrids ever made, 'London' sounds like a bunch of leftovers from the 'Doubt' sessions. Creative mastermind Mike Edwards still knows how to write a catchy tune, but everything on 'London' sounds so 1991 that you start to wonder if "time machine" shouldn't have been added to the list of instruments used. Since the album is still too early for an early Nineties revival, there is little hope that the collection of above-average, but outdated sounding tracks that is 'London' will generate any momentum for Jesus Jones. Edwards should write a worthy successor to 'Perverse' fast, because it is almost Good Friday for Mr. Jones.
