Jeb Loy Nichols used to share a London flat with Neneh Cherry, On-U Sound's Adrian Sherwood, and Ari Up of The Slits. Progressive stuff at the time, to be sure. Growing up on a diet of Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, and a double dose of Charlie Rich, Nichols makes soul music. The melodies are crystal-clear, the lyrics direct, and the sentiment undoubtedly true. Unfortunately, however, Nichols' songs don't much resemble the deep longing of, say, a Charlie Rich or even the smooth soul of Al Green. Listening to Jeb Loy Nichols, we're reminded more of smoothness of the Nat King Cole kind, but without the depth. In fact, the songs on Easy Now recall British duo Lighthouse Family all too often: smooth, soul-inflected pop aimed at suburban housewives. Nothing wrong with that: The songs are catchy, especially after a handful of listens, but the emotion is missing, the passion is lacking, and the all-too-clean production ruins what could otherwise have been a decent record. Should your dad be into Simply Red, Eric Clapton, and Sting, be sure to get this for him for Father's Day.
