"Wow, what is this?", was the first question I asked myself when I picked up this album. Who comes up with a name like Japancakes? Such a name reminds me of maple-syrup or something. At least something sweet and sticky! The music of Japancakes, however, isn't all that weird to tell you the truth. It sounds kind of familiar, but totally unique at the same time. I'm sure this may sound pretty damn corny, but I'm telling you it's true! The sentence "marvelous and breathtaking soundscapes" no longer just apply to Godspeed You Black Emperor!, because this collective from Athens, Georgia, fit right into that description. Godspeed may keep their darkness and pessimism, however, because Japancakes takes things more lighter, more uplifting and open. There's this splendid pedal steel guitar, which leaves plenty of room for breathing, while the cello and keyboards strengthen the repeating melodies even more. It's just now, when I come to realize the beauty that repetition can have. It's both soothing and exciting at the same time. The subtle transitions in melody and tempo sure keep you hooked until the last note of the composition. And oh, that steel guitar is so beautiful! Its clear tones flow through the songs like a gentle breeze over never-ending fields of grain. Yeah, it does give the band a country-flavor, but nothing to worry about. Everything is all right! There's no room for cowboy hats and chewing tobacco in this picture. I had some people listen to this record, who drew comparisons with this old Krautrock band called Neu! Apparently not so much for its instrumentation, but mainly for its similar feel and atmosphere. I honestly wouldn't know, but I might dig into that after listening to Japancakes. Start saving your money, kids! This beauty comes out in February.
