Jah Wobble! Natascha Atlas! Big names, big expectations. A short introduction of the two people above: Jah Wobble, bass player extraordinaire, dub, P.I.L., collaborations with fellow dub-lover Bill Laswell and many more; Natascha Atlas, Morrocan singer, many solo albums, Transglobal Underground, one of the most renowned non-western singers. Add these two together, and it almost is impossible to go wrong. Actually, it doesn't really go wrong, but the outcome isn't too pretty either. As can be expected, the music consists of equal parts dub and middle-eastern worldmusic, and fails to deliver at both sides. Why? Because it stays superficial for the whole album. Both dub and middle-eastern worldmusic demand a deep sound, it needs the space to create the appropriate atmosphere. Shout At The Devil sounds flat, without any dephts. It also needs sincere efforts by the composers and the musicians to produce something original, but the endresult isn't much different from Wobble's former works and Atlas's efforts in Transglobal Underground and solo. This makes Shout At The Devil a mediocre album, which could have been much better.
