News from the outer limits of contemporary music: Hrvatski's second album is out on Planet µ. Just like its predecessor Oiseaux 96-98, Swarm & Dither is a collection of tracks that gained widespread acknowledgement in the more avant-garde regions of underground electronic music over the past few years. Remixes, tracks off compilations, soundscapes for art projects and some vintage Nintendo gabbacore, all recorded between 1994 and 2002. Hrvatski, who started his career at age nine reprogramming his Commodore Vic20 for musical purposes, breaks every rule there is and stimulates every single nerve cell in your body with music that pushes the boundaries further once again. Not suited for the faint-hearted but a must for everyone who thought experimental music could not go further than it already had. Swarm & Dither starts off with an infamous remix of Vatstep DSP by Kid606, a nice display of musical madness. Just like Marbles, a gabbacore track composed with Gameboy sounds, or the irrestibly funny 2nd Zero Fidelity Mandible Investigation. But as these sound experiments are a bit too nerve-wrecking for repeated home-use at yours truly's living room, my preference goes out to the more intimistic tracks on this album. Like for instance the brilliant rework of the Rolling Stones classic Paint it Black, complete with background noise, vocoder effects and a melodica, or the very melancholic Anesthetise Thineself. Suffice to say that Swarm & Dither offers something for everyone who wants their ears tested. A totally mental album. And yes, that's a compliment.
