Just before the year is over, we get one of the most interesting lo-fi pop albums of the year by the Scottish Homescience. On their second album, the fragile voice of Andrew Ward leads us though its twenty-two songs. Even though the sound is minimalist, the songs are full of things like toy instruments, xylophone, and organ. Where to place them? Well, we hear some Beach Boys and Beatles but also Mercury Rev. And, unavoidably, the Elephant 6 family has to be mentioned: Homescience fits in perfectly. Not only because of the melodies and the diversity of sounds, but also because of the high quality. Sometimes you wish that songs like 'Soup & America' or 'Livin Whiskey' would last longer. But that would be the same as wanting to buy a Picasso and asking if you could also get that one in red and blue. Or sending Robert Pollard home to finish the rest of the songs. Songs For Sick Days is full of golden melodies and fine songs. Really in its place on the Track & Field label, which is often times a very positive sign. So see through the mentioned similar artists, add some Flaming Lips, and be satisfied.
