Hogwash is an Italian stoner rock band, formed in 1994. After appearing on various compilation CD's they released their debut 'Fungus Fantasia' in 1997. They gave songs for split 7 inches together with other Italian underground stoner rock bands Vortice Cremisi, Acajou and That's All Folks. Also, they've appeared on the Blue Cheer Tribute 'Blue Explosion'. In the summer of 2000 they released this second full-length album 'Tailoring'. The CD contains nine songs of which two last longer than ten minutes. Hogwash isn't just a normal stoner rock band. They start with a poppy rocksong ('Snapshot') with a catchy synthesizer-loop. The second song is already a bit darker and the third, 'Darkjoy', is a 12 minute long psychedelic explosion. Heavy and mellow songs alternate each other. 'Tailoring' also includes a cover of Blue Cheer's 'Just A Little Bit'. Hogwash plays a sort of powerpop with psychedelic, indie-rock and even some noise influences. Their diversity in styles and their psychedelic music reminded me a little bit of Motorpsycho. But their music can't really be compared to the common psychedelic bands. Hogwash shows that stoner rock doesn't always have to refer back to 70's music or repeated massive guitar licks. For fans of the heavier music played by Alabama Thunder Pussy, Sleep or Electric Wizard, Hogwash can be too soft or too vague. But for stoner fans that get tired of Kyuss-clones or bands that endlessly cite 70's bands and their guitar-riffs, Hogwash gives a good alternative. They make sure that stonerrock can expand his style in original ways during the 21st century.
