Graeme Downes is the guitarist/vocalist behind The Verlaines, a three-piece formed in 1981 that began their recording career with the record label Flying Nun. This relationship continued through the 80s, spawning several singles and albums. In 1987, New Zealand's Downes got a PhD, but now he's back into music as a solo artist. In short, Downes sounds like Jeff Buckley who married Elliott Smith. This means real, emotional, and often slow songs. Downes adds a minor jazz feel and an even smaller Southern United States taste. I listened to this record for at least 20 times, but I still can't figure out if this is just another nice record or the solo debut of the year. One thing is clear: Downes made a difficult record that doesn't swing well in every state of mind. You have to give this man some real attention. His music is too multi-layered and has too many pace changes to do other things at the same time that need the full attention of your mind.
