Audio.nl, as the name would suggest, is a new 12" label from the Netherlands, but don't expect to find a large number of their discs at your local record store. Apparently, the first thing they do when a new pressing is ready is send it off to Germany. Judging from their output so far, this is not such a bad idea. If it weren't for the obvious pointer in the name, I would have expected this to be yet another Cologne or Berlin-based enterprise. The quality of their releases is outstanding; every disc features one of the great names in electronics with tracks that are anything but leftovers. This particular offering features two pieces by Belgian artist Goem which are so understated they make Richie Hawtin's 'Concept' album sound busy and convoluted in comparison. One side consists of what can be best described as a tranquil symphony for electronic crickets, while on the other side it seems as if he's done nothing more than pitch down these crickets five octaves or so. As always, you either like this kind of stuff or you don't, but if you enjoy abstract soundscapes such as those made by Carsten Nicolai, Pole, and Hallucinator, you should try to seek out this release. And while you're at it, be sure to check out any other audio.nl twelve inch you might come across.
