This is Goatsnake's second full length album, released in the fall of 2000 on the mighty doom rock-label Rise Above. I wasn't able to get my hands on the record at that time, but now I got it. And as I'm playing the cd in my stereo-set, I look through the window, and I watch the leaves falling from the trees, while it's getting dark and cold outside (read slowly, use your imagination). Got the picture? Anyway, this is the perfect time to put on Goatsnake's 'Flower Of Disease'. To me, an acceptable alibi to pay attention to this album as yet. Goatsnake, with members of the legendary Obsessed in the line-up, have tried to sound heavier on this album, but also more melodic than they did on previous releases. With a guitar tuned down to -A-, played on the same amp Tony Iommi from Black Sabbath used on Master Of Reality, I guess you'll believe that the album sounds very heavy! But they also succeeded in making the record sound more melodic. Vocalist Pete Stahl should be praised for that. His soulful way of singing is quite unconventional for a doom band. Talking about unconventional: the use of a mouth harp and a lap steel guitar in a few songs isn't very doom either, but it works out great. 'Flower Of Disease' is an album that consists of 8 really good and surprising songs, not just a bunch of heavy riffs put together on a cd.
