Rephlex strikes again! And how, 'Vatican Nitez' is one of the finest braindance releases to come from the Cornwall label for a while. Global Goon is Johnny Hawthorne aka Johnny Hawk and this is his third album on Rephlex. One of his tracks featured on the 'Braindance' compilation last year: 'Long Whiney', an apt title because there's a sort of whiney feeling to his music. But he combines it with so much tongue-in-cheeck humour that it really works without becoming whiney in the bad sense of the word. 'I'm On The 73' is a nice example: a high note wave whines throughout the track, but combined with the other sounds it becomes a tune that will make you want to hum along. Another example is 'Globy Dubes, Champeen Of All Americky', written to honour a completely unknown athlete who ended last in the 100 metres on the Commonwealth Games, but he ran that distance with even more conviction then the winner. The track itself is the perfect example of how something seemingly sad can at the same time be very powerful. But there's more with 'Business Man' (da wicked whiney sound!), 'Jerky Dharma' (which keeps reminding me of that crazy 'Mike and Rich' album from way back), 'Kreem Ballet' (Pink Floyd goes IDM) and 'Stan's Slaves (as least as beautiful as the stuff on Aphex Twins 'Selected Ambient Works Part 1'). 'Vatican Nitez' is IMHO one of the nicest releases in times on Rephlex. IDM inna oldskool stylee, enjoy!
