For a time I didn't know what to make of this record. While the last album by this Finnish new folk group had instantly captured me I found this record difficult to really appreciate, even after several listening hours. But recently I witnessed Gjallarhorn performing live and the new songs were played in such manner that I finally came to peace with this new album.
Grimborg is somewhat more traditional and with less
world music elements than the previous album Sjofn. The overall sound is a bit more moody and with less details also. This gives the album a "naked" feeling and made me think that Gjallarhorn hadn't developed much. But none of this is true, after some
reconsideration the sparser use of instruments and details give the new songs instead a more authentic
feeling.
On their new album Gjallarhorn has produced a wonderful set of Scandinavian songs from the Middle
Ages and fused this with new forms (rock and jazz for example) and instruments (like ethnic percussion and a slide-didgeridoo) not common to this type of music. Songs like 'Grimborg', 'Herr Olof' and 'Vallevan'
sound very convincing and create the perfect
atmosphere for the mythological lyrics that go along
with it. Discover the beauty of this album and
Gjallarhorn will prove to you to be one of the most
creative and innovative acts in the Scandinavian folks
scene.
