The cover says "Gideon Smith & The Dixie Damned - Southern Gentelmen". And lack of spelling capabilities is not the only cliche about the South that is confirmed on this album. If stonerrock is the ideal soundtrack for car racing then the car that fits best with 'Southern Gentlemen' is a pick-up truck with a gun rack, a "Too Fast For You" bumper sticker and a six-pack within reach on the front seat. And maybe some other stuff too, considering there is a track called 'Outerspace Girl' on the album. The 3 guitarists (of course 3!) cover the entire spectrum of southern rock, from heavy straightforward grooves to more subtle slide work. The only thing stands between the bands at the absolute top of the genre, like Raging Slab, and The Dixie Damned are Gideon Smith's somewhat monotonous vocals. Another minor letdown is that there are too much straightforward rockers, where the more spacey and laidback songs like 'Ghost Rider', 'Wish You Were Mine' and 'Hello Cigarette Girl' showcase the qualities of the band better. The last mentioned song opens with the ultimate cowboy-poet pick-up line: "Hello Cigarette Girl, sucking on your cowboy killer." When the smoking Southern belle in question does not grasp the finer sexual connotations of this piece of poetry, Gideon Smith has a more hard hitting alternative at hand: "Hello Monster Truck Girl, run me over with your tires." Success guaranteed!
