It’s a classic though well-proven recipe:
- Quite a lot of Nirvana-rawness and dynamics
- Stir in an even amount of Goo Goo Dolls-melodies
- A touch of Weezer-freshness
- Blend well
- And finish off with a healthy dose of Sunny Day Real Estate’s emotional vocals and lyrics
There’s no doubt about it; The Get Up Kids are as American as a windmill is Dutch. ‘Something to write home about’ is their sophomore record, following up their 1997 release ‘Four minute mile’. While their previous record sounded raw and edgy, their new one is a big step forward in a lot of ways. Though still released on an indie label, they prove themselves to be worthy successors of the Goo Goo Dolls since they descended into Bon Jovi-esque territories. The Get Up Kids still sound crisp and fresh just like the Goo Goo Dolls did some five years ago. The new record sounds very complete; a good balance of song-material, and a decent production. There’s a few slow songs on ‘Something to write home about’ which sound extremely fit to be played on radio, though the best songs are the fast ones like opener ‘Holiday’, a killer-track which beats coffee for an adrenaline-rush anytime. Sure, The Get Up Kids’ recipe is old, but the ingredients are fresh (while they last) and provide for a lot of tasty goodness.
